MONTREAL – Samuel Labrecque of Granby, Que., and Ashley Norfleet of Brossard, Que.,  are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Jan. 25, 2015.
Labrecque, a 5-foot-8, 183-pound defenceman with the hockey Redmen, scored a natural hat-trick in less than eight minutes — at 10:35, 13:54 and 18:05 of the second period — including the game-winning goal as McGill defeated visiting Queen’s 4-1 last Friday and improved to 17-5-0. A first-year transfer from the NCAA’s Clarkson University, he became the first Redmen rearguard in 19 years to register a hat-trick. The 22-year-old economics major leads all CIS blueliners with nine goals in 22 games. Prior to enrolling at McGill, he skated for Clarkson, the Nanaimo Clippers (BCJHL) and Stanstead College (MPHL).
Norfleet, a 5-foot-11 power-hitter with the volleyball Martlets, scored 14.5 points as unranked McGill pulled off a victory with a stunning 3-2 upset over the No.3-ranked Universite de Montreal last Friday. It marked the team’s first road win over the Carabins since Nov. 17, 2013 and only their second conquest at the U de M campus since the 2005-06 season  Norfleet, a 22-year-old education junior majoring in teaching English as a second language, had nine kills and an ace on offence, to go along with nine digs and 4.5 blocks on defence. She is a product of College Bois-de-Boulogne.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
