1B Keifer Quick of the Notre Dame Falcons has been fast with the honors in 2015.

Quick (Leamington, Ont.) earned pre-season honors from the National College Baseball Writers Association.

The junior was named the NCBWA All Atlantic Region First Team. Last spring, Quick was a Second Team All Mountain East Conference selection at first base, leading the Falcons in many major offensive categories.

He was the team’s leading hitter with a .316 batting average, had 48 hits, including 12 for extra bases, while leading the team with 25 RBIs, and stole five bases as well.

Quick earned honourable mention on the 2014 Canadian Baseball Network all-Canadian team in 2014.

The Falcons went 27-22 last season, making it to the MEC tournament final.

Smarter than Wise: And earning pre-season NCBWA All Atlantic Region Second Team honors was 1B Bill Steven (Fonthill, Ont.) of the Virginia-Wise Cavaliers.

Steven hit .344 with five doubles, four homers and 28 RBIs. He had an .877 OPS in 40 games and now enters his senior season.

Quantrill continues chart climb: RHP Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) is ranked third amongst the Top 100 college sophomores on Perfect Game’s list compiled by Allan Simpson, member of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.

The 6-foot-3 Quantrill, who pitched for the Ontario Terriers and coach Scott Van de Valk and pitched well — when his manager remembered to make sure the Syracuse umpires showed on time — was drafted in the 26th round by the New York Yankees and scout Denis Boucher in 2013.

Hitting the books, hitting ‘em hard: Coach Terry McKaig’s UBC Thunderbirds had a strong fall. Never mind the field — in the classroom.

The 31 players averaged a 72% for the semester, led by SS Kyle McComb (Surrey, BC) who had a 90.3% average.
