CALGARY, AB – The Western Hockey League announced today that Kelowna Rockets forward Tyrell Goulbourne is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 25th, 2015.
Goulbourne tallied seven points (3g-4a), while posting a plus-five rating in just two games over the past week, leading the Rockets to two consecutive victories in that span.
On Friday, January 23rd, Goulbourne scored the opening goal and set up another in a 5-3 win over the visiting Everett Silvertips. In the rematch on Saturday, Goulbourne contributed with a five-point effort (2g-3a) and finished the game with a plus-four rating while earning first star honours in a 9-3 triumph over the ‘Tips.
The 21-year-old from Edmonton, AB has notched 33 points (17g-16a) along with a plus-14 rating in 39 games this season. The 6’0″, 200 lb forward is in his fifth WHL season with the Rockets and has amassed 113 points (55g-58a) in 252 career regular season contests. He was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the third round, 72nd overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft.
The WHL has also nominated Mack Shields of the Calgary Hitmen for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week award. Shields, a 19-year-old Saskatoon, SK native, posted a 1.00 goals against average and a .957 save percentage, including one shutout, in two starts during the past week. On Friday, January 23rd, Shields made 24 saves and was named the game’s second star as the Hitmen blanked the visiting Swift Current Broncos 7-0. On Saturday, January 24th, Shields turned aside 21 shots in a 5-2 victory over the host Edmonton Oil Kings. Now in his third campaign in the WHL with the Hitmen, Shields has registered a 50-23-0-3 record with four shutouts in 87 career regular season appearances.
