(ISN) – VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s rowing program and head coach Aalbert Van Schothorst are pleased to announce Daan Arscott as a new addition. The 18-year-old transferred to UVic in January 2015 from Colgate University in upstate New York.
“I chose UVic because of its exceptional Business program,” commented Arscott about the move. “I hope to be accepted into the program in the next year and a half. Also, UVic also has a phenomenal rowing program that offers year round on-water training and there’s an attitude of elitism among the team.”
Arscott, who originates from Port Hope, Ont., competed for four years with his high school club, Trinity College School Rowing, from 2010-14 and was also a member of the Peterborough Rowing Club from 2013-14. A multi-sport athlete from the get-go, Arscott first picked up rowing in Grade 9 after playing field sports such as hockey, football and rugby while growing up.
Arscott raced in the 2014 Canadian School Boys Regatta and won a bronze medal in the men’s quad. He also competed in the 2014 South Niagara High School Invitational Regatta and claimed a silver medal also in the men’s quad.
“I am most looking forward to developing not only relationships and an education that will help me through life but also to further enhance my rowing capabilities with the chance to become extremely successful in the sport.,” added Arscott. “Aalbert and the Vikes are a team like no other.”
Just last year, the six-foot-two sculler was endowed with the Distinction Award for Exceptional Athleticism and topped the 2k Erg score record in Trinity College School. He was nominated as the Top Junior Oarsman in 2011 and 2012, and was awarded the Top Senior Oarsman the next two subsequent years.
“Dan has moved into the program seamlessly as he has the hard-working and tough-minded attitude we like in our student-athletes,” said Schothorst. “He has a strong desire to learn and excel, and thus positions himself well to contribute to the program’s legacy of excellence.”
