Vancouver, BC – The UBC men’s volleyball team will be travelling to Alberta this weekend to face the University of Calgary Dinos. The Dinos (10-12) sit one spot behind the seventh place Thunderbirds (10-10) in the standings, as the two sides will be duking it out for crucial points and a possible spot in the post season. This is the last weekend of regular season play for the Dinos, as they have a bye for their final weekend.

The Thunderbirds have had a rough start to 2015. The team has yet to win a game in the new year, however head coach Richard Schick says that the team is in good spirits nonetheless.

“Despite the results, we’ve actually played some of our best volleyball in the past few weeks,” says Schick. “There have been some really tight games, what’s been missing is our ability to grasp those opportunities instead of letting them slip away.”

UBC have maintained a fairly solid defensive record despite their recent losses. Middle Chris Howe is tied for fourth in the conference for blocks per set, while his teammate, Ian Perry is ranked fifth in digs this season. This defence will need to be complemented by an offensive display of strength if the Thunderbirds are to be successful in staving off the University of Calgary.

The Dinos are coming off of a very positive weekend in Edmonton. They held a perfect record against MacEwan University, sweeping the Griffins 3-0 in both matches. Their player to watch is undoubtedly Keith West, who has the leads the entire CIS in kills with 312.

Because of the pressure to gain a spot in the playoffs, the stakes this weekend for both sides are as high as they have been all season. Coach Schick sums up what are sure to be a dramatic couple of matches: “No doubt about it…It’s go time!”

Friday’s match gets underway at 6:30 p.m. PT, followed by Saturday’s 5:30 p.m. PT start in Calgary. You can catch both games via the live stream at canadawest.tv.
