(ISN) – The Portland Winterhawks (29-19-0-3) won their sixth straight game as they defeated the visiting Victoria Royals (26-20-3-1) 4-3 at the Moda Center Wednesday.
Portland opened the scoring at the 15:46 mark of the first when Skyler McKenzie fought off a Royal by the net and flipped the puck back to the crease, where Dominic Turgeon collected it and roofed it for a 1-0 lead. The Royals tied it at the 18:20 mark on a goal by Regan Nagy to make it 1-1 going into the second.
Victoria took a lead 12:41 into the second on a goal by Alex Forsberg to make it 2-1, but the Hawks tied it at the 17:20 mark when Alex Schoenborn drove to the net and banged a rebound past Victoria netminder Justin Paulic to even the game at 2-2.
Portland regained a lead 3:08 into the third when Adam Henry redirected a Blake Heinrich point shot past Paulic for a 3-2 advantage. The Hawks went up by two at the 13:21 mark when Chase De Leo put a rebound past a prone Paulic for a 4-2 lead, but just 18 seconds later the Royals got back within one on Forsberg’s second goal of the night. However, the Hawks closed the door from there and finished with the 4-3 victory.
De Leo, Schoenborn, Mile Koules and Blake Heinrich all finished with two points apiece in the win.
Adin Hill earned the victory in net with 36 saves on 39 shots, while Victoria’s Paulic allowed four goals on four goals on 36 shots.
The Hawks are back in action Friday when they host the Kamloops Blazers at the Moda Center.
