(ISN) – VICTORIA, B.C. – A small continent of University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s track athletes will be travelling to Dempsey Indoor in Seattle for the UW Invitational on Jan. 30-31. The two-day meet will also feature several U.S. Olympians competing over the weekend and will provide a chance for the Vikes to race against many elite professionals.

The Vikes are scheduled to compete on the Saturday, with middle distance runner Cole Peterson racing for the third-straight week after securing gold medals in two events at the Alberta Golden Bear Open on Jan. 23. The third-year Edmonton native finished 9th in the men’s mile in a time of 4:08.57 at the UW Indoor Preview, on Jan. 17, and will be looking to shave a few seconds off in the same distance again this weekend.

Joining Peterson in the mile race will be 2014 1500-m Canada West track gold medallist Thomas Riva, who brings international racing experience to the men’s team. Third-year 3000-m track specialist Cody Therrien will race the 3000-m distance this weekend and will also be looking to beat his 2013 Canada West record of 8:28.56.

On the women’s side, fifth year Kendra Pomfret will also look to trim her time after finishing 7th in her debut mile at the UW Indoor Preview two weeks ago. Fourth year and CIS 1500-m silver medallist Shauna McInnis will line up alongside teammate Pomfret for the mile distance as well, while first year Chloe Hegland will race the longer 3000-m.

Races begin at 3 p.m. PST on Jan. 30, with live results available at
