Virginia outfielder Joe McCarthy out 12 weeks after undergoing back surgery

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — All-American outfielder Joe McCarthy of Virginia will miss approximately 12 weeks of the season after undergoing back surgery.

Coach Brian O’Connor says McCarthy had the surgery Thursday.

A native of Scranton, Pennsylvania, McCarthy started all 69 games last season and batted .301 with six home runs and 49 RBIs. In two seasons, he’s batted .317 with 152 hits in 129 games.

O’Connor says the cause of the injury is uncertain and that it could even be an old injury that just acted up a few weeks ago.

Says O’Connor, “We have no choice but to address it.”

McCarthy’s injury leaves a big void in the middle of the Cavaliers’ lineup.
