MONTREAL – Mathieu Pompei of Laval, Que., and Alex Kiss-Rusk of Beaconsfield, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Feb. 1, 2015.
Pompei, a 5-foot-8, 165-pound centre on the Redmen hockey team, scored four points, including a pair of goals, in two victories last week as McGill extended their win streak to six. A 23-year-old junior majoring in social work,
he potted a pair of goals and added an assist as No.8-ranked McGill rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat fifth-ranked UQTR 5-2 in a key showdown for top spot in the OUA East last Wednesday. Pompei then added a helper in a 4-1 victory over UOIT on Saturday. Prior to joining the Redmen as a walk-on in 2012, he skated for the Yarmouth Mariners of the Maritime Jr. A Hockey League after graduating in 2010 from Kings Edgehill School in Nova Scotia.
Kiss-Rusk, a 6-foot-4 centre with the basketball Martlets, scored 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as No.2-ranked McGill split a pair of games against the UQAM Citadins last week, including a game-winning jump shot at the buzzer as McGill rallied for a 57-55 road victory last Saturday. In the two games, the 21-year-old psychology sophomore shot a sizzling 57.9 per cent from the floor (11-for-19) and went 2-for-4 from the foul-line. She was also credited with two blocked shots, a pair of steals and two assists. The daughter of Annette Kiss and Rick Rusk, who both starred on the basketball court for McGill in the 1980s, she transferred to McGill last season after a year at Virginia Tech after graduating from Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
