Feb 06, 2015

OTTAWA (CIS) – A CIS basketball attendance record could fall on Friday night when the Carleton University Ravens and University of Ottawa Gee-Gees face off in the ninth annual MBNA Capital Hoops Classic at the Canadian Tire Centre, in Ottawa.

Tip-off for the women’s game is set for 6 p.m., with the much-anticipated contest between the top two men’s teams in the country following at 8 p.m.

As of mid-afternoon on Friday, over 10,000 tickets had already been sold for the event, a few hundred shy of the CIS basketball regular season record of 10,523 fans set at the 2009 Capital Hoops Classic (Jan. 28).

That 2009 Hoops Classic attendance ranks fifth on the all-time CIS basketball list. The 2003 and 2005 editions of “Basketball vs. Bullying: One-on-One” rank second and fourth in CIS basketball annals with crowds of 11,853 and 10,877, respectively. The 1978 CIS men’s championship final between Acadia and Saint Mary’s sits in third place (11,000).
