(ISN) – Hempstead, NY – Sophomore Jamel Hudson’s come-from-behind victory was one of the bright spots for the Pride but the sixth-ranked Big Red of Cornell won eight of the 10 matches on the way to a 41-7 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association victory over Hofstra at the Mack Physical Education Center Saturday afternoon.

Hudson, ranked 17th by InterMat at 141 pounds, found himself down 8-0 to Cornell senior and Long Island native Nick Arujau in the first period. But Hudson rallied with a reversal and two-point nearfall to cut the deficit in half at 8-4 after one period. Hudson would dominate the match from that point and post an 18-8 major decision for his 20th victory of the season against just three losses. It was also his 11th consecutive victory.

Unfortunately for the Pride, the Hudson win was the sixth match of the contest and cut the Hofstra deficit to 22-7. Pride sophomore Michael Hughes put Hofstra on the scoreboard earlier with a 3-2 victory, on the riding time point, over Big Red senior Jacob Aiken Phillips at 285. Hughes improved to 18-9 on the season.

After the Hofstra win at 141, the Big Red added two more wins by fall and a major decision to thwart any Pride comeback thoughts. Cornell recorded pins at 125, 149, 165 and 184 pounds and picked up a forfeit win at 133. The Big Red also tallied major decisions at 157 and 197.

Starting the match at 184 pounds, Cornell’s top-ranked senior Gabe Dean pinned Pride junior Jermaine John at the 2:42 mark for a 6-0 lead. 12th-ranked senior Jace Bennett followed with an 11-1 major over freshman Michael Oxley at 197 for a 10- lead in the contest.

After Hughes put the Pride on the scoreboard, Cornell’s third-ranked 125-pound junior Nahshon Garrett pinned freshman Bryan Damon at the 4:56 mark and the Pride forfeited 133 as the Big Red opened up the 22-3 lead. Hudson’s win gave the Pride four more points. But Cornell’s Taylor Simaz’s pin of sophomore Alex Mirante started a run of three bonus point victories as the Big Red cruised to the victory.

Hofstra, which dropped its third consecutive dual match, slips to 5-10 overall and 3-5 in the EIWA. Cornell is 13-1 on the season and 6-0 in conference play. The Pride return to action on Friday, February 13 when they travel to Philadelphia for another EIWA match at Drexel University. Match time is 7 p.m.
