(ISN) – VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes Varsity Council is proud to announce their January 2015 athletes and team of the month, supported by Original Joe’s in Tuscany Village. This month’s award winners are women’s basketball forward Jessica Renfrew, men’s rugby player Guiseppe duToit and the Vikes women’s basketball team.
Jessica Renfrew, Women’s Basketball
FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Fifth-year Vikes women’s basketball forward Jessica Renfrew has been named January’s Athlete of the Month. Most notably, the senior hit a career-high 36 points in the Jan. 16 win over Winnipeg. The University of Victoria single-game scoring record is held by Carol Turney with 42 points, back in 1978 against Saskatchewan. On Jan. 16-17 the Vikes swept both games against the then CIS No. 7-ranked Wesmen at McKinnon Gym.
Renfrew, a Victoria native, has started all 16 conference games to date and is ninth in conference scoring with 15.3 points per game. Renfrew was recently named Canada West Second Star of the Week and has been the team’s top scorer for eight of 16 games played.
Guiseppe duToit, Men’s Rugby
MALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Second-year Vikes men’s rugby player Guiseppe duToit has been selected as January’s Male Athlete of the Month. The fly half from Maple Ridge is the top Vike scorer in the CDI Premier League table with 72 points, including 15 converts and 14 penalty kicks in seven games played.
DuToit has been a prolific kicker throughout the season and was crucial for securing points in the 35-17 victory against the Castaway Wanderers in the prestigious Barnard Cup final last November. At only 18, duToit was also a starter for team Canada in the Americas Rugby Championship in 2013.
TEAM OF THE MONTH
The women’s basketball team are on the rise after winning only two games in the opening half of the season. Throughout January, the Vikes women went on a five-straight game-winning streak thanks to the leadership of fifth years Jessica Renfrew and Cassandra Goodis, as well as third year Jenna Bugiardini. Fifth-year point guard Goodis leads the team in assists and is currently seven assists away from breaking the Canada West all-time assists record (539). Senior forward Renfrew hit her career-high 36 points in a single game and was named Canada West Second Star of the Week, while forward Bugiardini averages the most rebounds for the team. On Jan. 31, the Vikes swept the Lethbridge Pronghorns thanks to rookie guard Amira Giannattasio’s jumper that sealed the win at the buzzer. With the wins the Vikes have successfully secured a spot in the playoffs for the third-straight season.
