(ISN) – VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s rugby team are flying to Europe for a two-week training and competition tour in Germany, from Feb. 5-15. Twenty-four Vikes will be suiting up to play against two local sides, including Hessen RU, in Heusenstamm, and Baden-Wuerttemberg RU, in Pforzheim-Eutingen.
“This tour will be a good chance for the boys to get to know each other better and improve their rugby skills as a team,” said Doug Tate, Vikes men’s rugby head coach.
The team will know little about their opponents but the tour is guaranteed to provide the unique opportunity to train on international grounds, and watch some high-level club sides in action, including watching veteran Georgian and Russian teams.
“We’ll be going to places where rugby is the main sport, so our players will be immersed completely in the culture,” said Rick Farrally, Vikes men’s rugby assistant coach. “This experience will definitely be an eye-opener for the boys.”
The Vikes will travel to Heusenstamm, a half hour drive from Frankfurt, to take on Hessen RU on Feb. 7 and will stop in Heidelberg and Munich before facing off with Baden-Wuerttemberg RU in Eutingen, a three hour ride from Munich, on Feb. 14.
There is no shortage of travelling experience as many of the Vikes have ventured overseas with B.C. or Canadian squads, but this will definitely be unique for the group to travel as a UVic contingent.
Among the travelling list are team captain and centre Remi Anctil, prop Macbryan Bos, hooker Casey Cavers, eightman Dustin Dobravsky, scrum half James Pitblado, fullback Fergus Hall, Joseph Erlic and winger Crosby Stewart. The Vikes will be without stand outs Guiseppe duToit and Oliver Nott, who are training for Canada’s U20 Team that will compete for the Junior World Rugby Trophy 2015.
The Vikes will be back in BC Rugby and CDI Premier action against Burnaby Lake on Feb. 21 in Burnaby. Kick off is set for 2.30 p.m. PT. The team will then have a quick turnaround as they look to defend their Canadian National University 7s Rugby Championship on Mar. 7 in Langford.
