(ISN) – ROSEMONT, Ill. – C.J. Maestas and Bobby Baker have earned the Big Ten weekly honors for the second straight week, announced by the conference office on Monday, February 9. Maestas was tabbed Co-Gymnast of the Week in combination with Michigan’s Stacey Ervin while Baker claimed the Freshman of the Week accolade.
The Illini duo accumulated a combined three event titles as Illinois dominated Iowa in a 440.150-424.500 victory at Huff Hall over the weekend. Maestas claimed the rings and all-around title while Baker took the top spot in the parallel bars competition.
A score of 15.800 on the rings was enough for the title for Maestas. He posted a mark of 88.650 for the all-around title, beating out Baker who turned in an 87.950 effort. Baker claimed the parallel bars title with a score of 15.300, which ranks fifth best in team history.
Maestas’ titles inched him even closer to his debut on the all-time career event titles top 10 list. He now sits just four titles away (41) from a tie for the 10th spot on the list at 45. Assistant coach Daniel Ribeiro currently holds that spot. The redshirt junior has claimed 18 rings titles during his Illinois career which ranks 3rd on the all-time list. In the all-around, Maestas has earned 11 career titles, enough for a tie at fifth place all-time. Maestas has now claimed the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week award three times this season and five in his career with the Orange and Blue.
Baker has now claimed seven event titles across five events during the first five meets of his collegiate career. This also marks his fourth Big Ten Freshman of the Week award.
Illinois will host Penn State at Huff Huff this Saturday, Feb. 14, at 4 pm. The meet will feature the 9-0 Nittany Lions against 9-0 Illinois. This will be the first non-coed home meet of the season for the Orange and Blue.
