(ISN) – The Mid-Island Lighting Field Lacrosse team is headed to the BC 2015 Provincial Championships. Earlier this month the team took a deciding 7-1 victory over the Nanaimo Raiders to win the Vancouver Island U12 Field Lacrosse Championship.
The island championship game was played at Merle Logan Field in Nanaimo, which held a special place for one of the Cowichan players. The Lighting boast 2 U10 players who play up on their U12 team, Seth O’Brien and Reed Gallaugher, and for Reed Gallaugher this game held special meaning as his grandfather used to race modified race cars at this very spot. Merle Logan Field was once Grandview Bowl, one of the premier race tracks in the pacific northwest.
Today it hosts not the up and coming race car drivers, but the up and coming sports stars of the island. On this day it hosted Vancouver Island’s premier field lacrosse teams, including the Cowichan Valley U12 team, who bested their Nanaimo counterparts, 7 – 1. Both teams move on to the provincial championships February 21, but only one moves on as the Island Champions, the Mid-Island Lightning.
