Vancouver, BC – Three UBC volleyball players were recognized for their outstanding 2014-15 seasons. Third-year outside hitter Danielle Brisebois was named a Canada West Second Team All-Star, as was men’s third-year outside hitter Mac McNicol, while rookie setter Byron Keturakis was named to the Canada West All-Rookie Team.

Manitoba Bisons fourth-year right side Rachel Cockrell is the 2014-15 Canada West women’s volleyball Most Valuable Player, the conference announced today. 

The 5’10” Arts major topped the league in kills and kills-per-set, while leading the Bisons to a 13-11 regular season record and a quarterfinal series matchup with the UBC Okanagan Heat, starting tonight at 6:00 pm PT. 

Donata Huebert was selected as the Libero of the Year and is the first player ever to win the award three times.  The Calgary Dinos took home three individual awards – outside hitter Kate Pexman is Rookie of the Year, setter Jordhynn Guy was selected for the Student-Athlete Community Service Award, and Natalie Gurnsey was named Coach of the Year.

FIRST & SECOND ALL-STAR TEAMS.  Cockrell and Huebert are joined in the First Team All-Stars by Alberta’s Meg Casault, UBC Okanagan’s Katy Klomps, Thompson Rivers’ Iuliia Pakhomenko and Trinity Western’s Alicia Perrin. 

Guy headlines the Second Team All-Stars alongside UBC’s Danielle Brisebois, Trinity Western’s Sophie Carpentier, Alberta’s Dione Lang, Regina’s Michelle Sweeting and UBC Okanagan’s Katie Wuttanee.

Pakhomenko, Brisebois, Guy, Lang and Wuttanee are first-time All-Stars.

Trinity Western Spartans fifth-year outside hitter Nick Del Bianco is the 2014-15 Canada West men’s volleyball Most Valuable Player, the conference announced today.

The Surrey, BC native finished the regular season first in service aces per set (0.57) and third in kills per set (3.92), leading the Spartans to the second-best record in the conference at 20-4.  

Fellow Spartan Tyler Koslowsky was named Libero of the Year.  The last time Trinity Western players won MVP and Libero of the Year on the same season was 2011-12, which coincided with the Spartans’ last conference championship.

Mount Royal Cougars outside hitters Tyler Schmidt and Jordan Parkin were honoured as well.  Schmidt was voted Rookie of the Year, while Parkin was selected for the Student-Athlete Community Service Award.

Grant Wilson was named Coach of the Year after steering the Brandon Bobcats to a 19-5 record, which set a new school record.

FIRST & SECOND ALL-STAR TEAMS.  Joining Del Bianco on the First Team All-Stars are 2013-14 MVP Brad Gunter (Thompson Rivers), Ryley Barnes (Alberta), Tom Douglas-Powell (Winnipeg), Ken Rooney (Manitoba) and Sebastien Steigmeier (Brandon).  Rooney and Steigmeier are first-time All-Stars.

The Second Team consists of Mac McNicol (UBC), Ryan Sclater (Trinity Western), Paul Thomson (Saskatchewan), Sam Tuivai (Brandon), Brett Walsh (Alberta) and Keith West (Calgary).  Only Sam Tuivai is a repeat All-Star, after having been previously selected to the First Team in 2012-13.
