Duke women’s lacrosse coach Kerstin Kimel being treated for breast cancer

DURHAM, N.C. — Duke says women’s lacrosse coach Kerstin Kimel is being treated for early stage breast cancer.

School officials said Thursday in a statement that Kimel will continue to lead the program, that her prognosis is good and that she is in the treatment stage of her recovery after being diagnosed last month.

Kimel says “the young women in our program have handled this sensitive situation just as I had hoped — with class and integrity.

Kimel is a five-time Atlantic Coast Conference coach of the year who has led the team since it was started in 1996. She has led Duke to 17 consecutive NCAA tournaments, six appearances in the national semifinals and one ACC tournament title.
