Ben Scher with Serevi BC U18 boys

(ISN) – The BC Rugby U18 boys stayed focused in the face of the challenge. First there was the stage; a crowd of 10,000 rugby fans at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium. Secondly there were the opponents; the High School All Americans, who previously defeated BC in the Cup Final in 2014. This year BC had experience on their side and they would not be denied again.

BC raced out to a 17-0 half time lead and continued to pressure the Americans throughout the second half. BC was clinical in defence and tackling throughout the tournament and they seemed to always find the momentum changing score whenever their opponents threatened to climb back into the match. This was especially true in the Cup Final. The All Americans scored one try early in the second half, bringing the tally to 24-5, but Mitch Cameron dotted down moments later for BC. The 5th BC try of the game answered any question about the outcome. BC played a disciplined and spirited closing two minutes and then the celebrations began.

“Last year we were in the same position, and we didn’t capitalize, so it feels so good to win,” said George Barton. “Thanks to everyone who made it possible for us to be here.”
“The boys took what we’ve been working on and put it into a perfect game here in the stadium,” said Coach Shane Thompson. “They put the effort in with practicing, and it paid off.”
After the game, Ben Scher was selected by Sevens legend Waisale Serevi as the Powered by Serevi Tournament MVP

Earlier on Saturday afternoon, the BC U16 boys set the bar for success on the rugby pitch with a championship win of their own.

U18 BC Boys Champs

While opponents Atlantis proved to be a well drilled and athletic side, BC’s Jack Scher found a small gap in the defense and exploited it with a brilliant run for the game’s first try. His teammate Jake Scott added an insurance try in the second half – one that proved to be much needed in the end – as he collected the ball on the wing, high stepped over an ankle tap and raced in for the try.

Atlantis narrowed to gap to 12-7 in the closing moments, but scenes of jubilation followed as the referee blew the final whistle and BC became 2015 Las Vegas Invitational Champions in the U16 Division.

Earlier Results
On Friday, 3 BC teams reached the Cup Finals, but fell short of the ultimate goal; the BC U18 Elite Girls (3W, 3L), the U18 Open division Girls (5W, 1L) and the U17 Boys (5W, 1L) all had great tournaments and left everything on the field. The BC U23 Women (4W, 1L) also enjoyed a memorable run at the LVI, getting all the way to the Cup semi-final, but were derailed by a tough Kiwi team. The BC U23 Men (2W, 3L) had mixed results playing in the Men’s Open division. They bowed out in the Bowl after receiving four yellow cards and surrendering a try on the last play of their semi-final game.

There were many positives to take away from the tournament and all the BC teams represented the province very well. Congratulations to all the players and coaches on a fantastic weekend of rugby.

  result: 3rd place

The BC Rugby U23 Women showed a ton of heart playing against a bigger, stronger Arongatahi team from New Zealand. Unable to match them in size, the BC women made a valiant effort to outpace them and showed great toughness and persistence in the contact. In the end, they were simply overmatched. The resulting 4-1 record and third place finish is one that the women should be proud of, and it speaks very well about this group who came together quickly and did an outstanding job of representing BC for the first time at this age and skill category.

We are sending a group of very talented athletes that have the potential to repeat as tournament winners,” said Coach Darcy Patterson. “They believe they can win and that is the ultimate goal for us this tournament. They all have a very high work ethic and work hard to be the best rugby players they can. It is going to be exciting to see how their hard work over the last few weeks transfers into the tournament.“
