Elis vathje

(ISN) – SOCHI, Rus.— Canada’s Elisabeth Vathje continued to impress in her rookie season on the World Cup by placing sixth on the track that hosted the Olympic Winter Games just one year ago this month.

The 20-year-old Calgarian clocked the third-fastest start and fourth-fastest time in her second run, bumping her up from ninth- to sixth-place with a total two-run time of one minute, 57.09 seconds (1:57.09) on the 1,500-metre track.

“I leave Sochi with it being one of my favourite tracks. This week has been a total learning week – new track, new lines, getting lost in the curves, and learning to chill with my sled. The sled is quick, now I just need to poish my lines up,” said Vathje, who will take advantage of a small break before racing World Championships in Winterburg, GER, on March 6 by visiting with family in the Netherlands and enjoying some home-cooked meals. “Winterburg is another of my favourite tracks, and I have supporters coming to cheer me on, so I’m really looking forward to World Champs.”

Great Britain’s Lizzy Yarnold laid down the fastest two-run time total of the day at 1:56.57 to step onto the top of the podium in a repeat of her Olympic gold performance here last year. Local hero Maria Orlova was second in 1:56.61, and Germany’s Anja Huber Selbach was third after posting a two-run time of 1:56.92.

Despite finishing just off the podium with a total time of 1:56.96, Austrian Janine Flock claimed victory in the overall standings, 20 points ahead of last year’s overall winner, Yarnold, who couldn’t make up enough points after bowing out of the early-season Calgary races due to health reasons.

Vathje, who has four podium finishes in her rookie season on the World Cup, was the top Canuck, with teammates Lanette Prediger of Calgary (1:57.56) and Jane Channell of North Vancouver (1:57.82) finishing 12th and 13th respectively.
