(ISN) – VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes track teams broke three UVic records at the Husky Classic on Feb. 14 in Washington, Seattle. Fifth-year Vike Thomas Riva, second year Tyler Smith and fourth year Rachel Francois achieved new school records today.
“We had big performances today with many Vikes achieving personal bests in one of the most competitive meets of the indoor season,” said Brent Fougner, Vikes track head coach.
On the men’s team, Riva met his intentions of the meet coming sub four minutes in the mile and beating the school record which he previously held at 4:00.06. Riva was the top Canadian in the race at the UW Invitational and clocked in at 3:59.00 to finish sixth overall.
Second year Vike Smith also broke a UVic record but in the 800-m event. The record was previously held by team mate Riva, who raced 1:50.38 in 2013. Smith crossed in 1:49.12.
Third year Peterson hit a personal best in the mile event clocking in at 4:05.65.
The women’s team also saw a UVic record broken, as stand out Francois beat her own 2014 record in the 800- m (2:06.22) finishing in 2:05.53 this Saturday.
Fourth year Vike Shauna McInnis reached a personal best, improving from last week’s results, in the mile timing in at 4:46.96 and finishing 24th overall.
The Vikes will be back on the track tomorrow, Feb. 15, for the UW Indoor Open.
