QUEBEC CITY – Liam Veregin of Ottawa completed a golden sweep of the backstroke events with a victory in Saturday’s 200-m race at the Speedo Eastern Canadian Open swimming competition being held this week at Université Laval.

Veregin, the 50-m and 100-m backstroke winner, clocked 2:10.33 in Saturday’s race in the 16 and under category. Richie Stokes of Etobicoke, Ont.

, was second in 2:11.63 and Luka Tomic of Oakville third in 2:11.76.

Other winners in the age group were Jong Hoon Lee of Etobicoke, Ont., in the 400-m freestyle, Alexandre Perreault of Ottawa in the 100-m butterfly and Tristan Gingras in the 50-m breaststroke.

In the men’s 17 and over category, winners were Liam Desjarlais of St-Jerome, Que., in the 400-m freestyle, Ivan Cocunubo of Gatineau, Que., in the 100-m butterfly, Austin Rockett of Toronto in the 200-m backstroke and Matthew Ackman of Pointe-Claire, Que., in the 50-m breaststroke.

In women’s competition, Tessa Cieplucha of Oakville is now up to three individual gold medals as well after winning the 400-m freestyle in the 16 and over age group.

Other wins were earned by Stephanie Hussey of Pointe-Claire in the 100-m butterfly, Meryn McCann of Etobicoke in the 200-m backstroke and Marie-Laurence Godin of Pointe-Claire in the 50-m breaststroke.

The winners in the women’s 15 and under were Olivia Anderson of Etobicoke in the 400-m freestyle, Mabel Zavaros of Oakville, Ont., in the 100-m butterfly, Rosie Zavaros of Oakville in the 200-m backstroke and Nina Kucheran of Pointe-Claire in the 50-m breaststroke.

Competition ends Sunday.
