Ottawa, Ont. Feb. 24, 2015 — Belinda Trussell of Stouffville, Ont. led the Canadian contingent on the leaderboard during week seven of the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF), held Feb. 17-22 in Wellington, Fla.

Trussell’s win came during the largest week of competition in the history of the AGDF, which attracts top riders from around the world. Riding Anton (Aneaus X Melit), Robyn Eames’ 15-year-old Sachsen gelding, Trussell topped the competitive field in the FEI Grand Prix Special CDI4* with a score of 71.490% on Feb.

“It feels great to have this win for Canada leading up to the [Pan American Games] this summer,” said a thrilled Trussell. “Anton was in top form for the Special. When I looked back and watched the test, I was very happy with the test, and I still see room for improvement.”

Not far behind was Megan Lane of Loretto, Ont. and Caravella (Contango x Riverman), a 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare co-owned by Megan and Cathy Lane. The duo showed off their strong piaffe and passage for a score of 70.608% to finish third.

Three of Canada’s horse/rider combinations from the 2014 Altech FEI World Equestrian Games were in the top five placings in the FEI Grand Prix CDI4* on Feb. 19. Trussell was once again the top Canadian, scoring 70.4% aboard Anton for third place.

“Anton is a wonderful horse who holds a special place in my heart,” commented Trussell. “He is so solid at this level, and performs each time in the ring.”

Lane and Caravella followed in fourth (69.860%), while Karen Pavicic of Surrey, B.C. scored 68.740% for fifth place riding Don Daiquiri (Cardinale x Rubenstein I), a 13-year-old Oldenburg gelding she owns in partnership with Jayne Essig.

On Feb. 20, Pavicic brought Don Daiquiri back into the ring for the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle CDI4*. They laid down a lovely performance resulting in a second place finish with a score of 72.250%.

In seventh place (68.425%), was two-time Olympian Jacqueline Brooks of Cedar Valley, Ont. riding D Niro (D-Day X Napoleon 625), a 16-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding owned by Mary Brooks of Brookhaven Dressage Inc.

Veteran Christilot Boylen of Toronto Ont., was the top Canadian in the CDI3* division, riding her 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding, Drentano (De Niro x Bretano). They finished third in the FEI Grand Prix Special on a score of 67.392%, and ninth in the FEI Grand Prix (67.4%).

In the CDI1* small tour, Trussell had success with a second mount, Tattoo 15 (Tuareg x Ramiro’s Son), her 12-year-old Westphalian gelding. Together, they earned fourth place in the FEI Prix St. Georges on Feb. 20, with a score of 69.868%, and fifth in the FEI Intermediate I (70.079%) on Feb. 21.

“I have to pinch myself,” said Trussell. “I have two top horses that are doing so well among the huge classes and top competition in Florida. Tattoo did some great tests, and there is so much more in him.”

Lane also contested the small tour aboard San D’Or (Sandro Hit x Cocktail), Deer Ridge Equestrian’s nine-year-old Westphalian gelding. In the FEI Prix St. Georges CDI1* the duo achieved a sixth place finish after scoring 69.342%. They followed up with a third place finish in the FEI Intermediate I on a score of 70.395%. In addition, Lane rode Froukje Staal’s 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, ZZ Top R&D to a 10th place finish on a score of 67.737% in the FEI Prix St. Georges.

Following close behind Trussell in the FEI Intermdiate I CDI1* was Tina Irwin of Stouffville, Ont., who finished sixth after scoring 69.605% with Fancy That (Donnerschweg X Freiherr), Christine Faux’s nine-year-old Oldenburg mare. They went on to finish third in the FEI Intermediate I Freestyle on Feb. 22, with a score of 71.1%.

Boylen was also successful in the FEI Intermediate I Freestyle CDI1* aboard Donatella 79 (De Niro X Canaster I), a 10-year-old Oldenburg mare owned by Windhaven Farm and Jill Irving. She finished 10th on a score of 67.475%.
