TORONTO, ON – Katy Klomps is the first student athlete from UBC Okanagan to earn a CIS All-Canadian award as she was announced at the women’s volleyball awards banquet Wednesday night in Toronto.

The fourth year middle blocker from Surrey, BC was honoured as one of the top 14 players in women’s volleyball during the 2014/15 season in Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

Although this is the first All-Canadian award for UBC Okanagan the school has won two other CIS awards in 2012/13 the women’s volleyball team placed Emily Oxland on the All-Rookie team and Steve Manuel was selected as Coach of the Year.

Katy Klomps

The All-Canadian comes just weeks after Katy was named to the Canada West All-Star and another in a string of awards she has won playing volleyball as a student athlete at UBC Okanagan.

The nursing student has started in all four of her years for the Heat and has now won a CIS All-Canadian (first in school history), two Canada West All-Stars (2013/14, 2014/15), and has been a Canada West Athlete/Star of the Week twice. Last year Katy was the UBC Okanagan Student-Athlete of the Year and in her first year was named Heat women’s volleyball Rookie of the Year.

Along with awards on her mantle Klomps is starting to accumulate records, after four seasons in Canada West she is currently second-all time in regular season career total blocks and blocks per set with 407 total blocks and 1.35 blocks per set.

In 2014/15 Klomps’ tallied 135 total blocks that sets a new Canada West record that Katy owns with Alicia Perrin from Trinity Western, who also recorded 135 total blocks this season.

In career blocks in Canada West Katy trails just Perrin, a graduating middle from TWU, who has 512, a mark Klomps could surpass next season with more than 105 total blocks.

Klomps already holds the record as well for total blocks in a single match at 15, acquired on November 2, 2013 vs. Mount Royal. She also is tied for the record for most blocks in a single playoff game. Katy’s 11 versus Mount Royal on February 15, 2013 is tops along with two others.

Her coach Steve Manuel is extremely pleased at Katy’s selection to the All-Canadian team and the 14 year coach wanted to point out that Katy has put the work in the gym to be the player she is but also that she works extremely hard and manages her time incredibly well to play at this level and be enrolled in a challenging program like Nursing as a student athlete.
