Mariners deliver deadly blow to DC Royals

The #3 VIU Mariners surged to a straight set victory over the 6th seeded DC Royals to start off today’s Quarter Final round at the PACWEST Provincial Volleyball Championships. The win advances VIU to tomorrow’s Semi Final match against the #2 Capilano University Blues at 1pm. Having been dealt the deadly blow, Douglas completes its post-season play-off campaign with a fifth-place finish.

“We were a bit frantic to start and could have been more organized, but overall we played a good match,” comments Head Coach Shayne Hyde of the VIU Mariners. “Capilano has a well-balanced offense and Sarah Hughes, who is a great setter is a great asset to their squad. Like all the match-ups we’ve had with them this season, we suspect a hard battle!”

PACWEST 1st Team All-Star and fourth-year middle Tylar Turnball (Port Coquitlam) earned Player of the Match for VIU with her dominating offense and team leadership skills. All-Rookie Team recipient Georgia Hurry was named Player of the Match for Douglas for her tough serving and superb job on offense. Georgia had 8 kills, 1 block and 2 aces.

Next match is the Men’s Quarter Final at 3pm:
