Chargers mount massive attack on Mariners

It was a battle of epic proportions as the second-seeded Camosun Chargers took to home court to face off against the #3 VIU Mariners in today’s Island rivalry semi-final. Despite an explosive come back in the second set, the Mariners fell prey to a massive attack put forth by the Chargers which ended in a barn-burning four-set victory for the home team. While VIU moves to tomorrow’s Bronze Medal match, Camosun will go for Gold in the Men’s Championship match slated for 8pm.

“Our plan was to serve well, take their middles out of play and force the ball to the wings and let our block and defense go to work,” states Chargers Head Coach Charles Parkinson. “The second set was a bit of a hiccup … our passing went to hell in a hand basket and VIU’s serving was really strong, but we recovered which is the sign of a team that is peaking at the right moment.”

Second-year leftside Cam Fennema (Pacific Christian) led Camosun to victory with 14 kills and 5 digs and captured Player of the Match honours for his strong performance. Third-year libero/leftside Nick Stefanakis delivered 4 aces along with consistent hitting and a solid defense in tonight’s match to earn POM for VIU.
