Mikaël Kingsbury ties World Cup wins record with 28th career victory

Moguls phenom Mikaël Kingsbury won a dual moguls event in Japan to register his 28th World Cup victory tying the FIS all-time record, set by France’s Edgar Grospiron in 1995.

Kingsbury defeated fellow Canadian Philippe Marquis by a score of 19-16 in the final at Tazawako, just after 1 am ET on Sunday morning.

Grospiron was Olympic champion at Albertville in 1992, where moguls debuted. The three-time Olympic medallist won his 28 World Cup events after 78 starts. Sunday’s dual moguls was Kingsbury’s 60th start, although the dual moguls event was not on the World Cup calendar during the Frenchman’s day.

Kingsbury, the silver medallist from Sochi, also set a moguls win-streak record of seven-in-a-row. According to FIS the previous record was co-held with American Jeremy Bloom. Kingsbury got the streak started by topping the podium in Calgary back on January 3rd of this year.

The 22-year-old won the moguls event yesterday and in doing so clinched his fourth-straight Crystal Globe, awarded to the points leader after the moguls season. The native of Deux-Montagnes, QC also won the gold medal in dual moguls at World Ski Championships in Kreischberg, Austria earlier this year.

Quebec City’s Simon Pouliot-Cavanagh narrowly lost to Australian Matt Graham in the small final by a score of 18-17, denying Canada the podium sweep.

The top Canadian finish on the women’s side was a fourth by Terrebonne, QC’s Alex-Anne Gagnon, who lost 20-15 in the small final to American Hannah Kearney.
