(ISN) – VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes women topped the podium once more as fourth year Rachel Francois reclaimed gold in the 600-m event on Day 2 of the Canada West Track and Field Championship on Feb. 28 in Winnipeg, Man. The Vikes women finished tied for fifth in the team standings with 49 points, while Trinity Western took home the conference banner.


Francois, the three-time defending CIS gold-medallist in the 600-m event, reclaimed gold at the conference level this year after crossing in 1:30.17. In her rookie season (2012) Francois swept gold in the Canada West and CIS 600-m but finished second the past two seasons (2013, 2014) at the conference level. Today’s performance was her third gold medal of the championship. Teammate Nicole Soderberg also stepped on the podium again finishing third in the 600-m in 1:32.43.

Fifth-year Vike Kendra Pomfret was the top Vike in the 1500-m, crossing in 4:31.42 for fifth place.Shauna McInnis closely followed for sixth place in 4:35.44. Trinity Western swept the podium in the event with Spartans Sarah Inglis, Fiona Benson and Regan Yee finishing in first, second and third place, respectively. Inglis broke the 1500-m championship record with a time of 4:16.84 – smashing a 34-year-old record set in 1981 by former Vike and Olympian Debbie Scott (4:19.96).

In the final relay event of the day the Vikes women raced in the 4×400-m relay. This year they claimed bronze in 3:53.65 with runners Caroline Harrell, Soderberg, Andrea Robinson and Francois each running a leg for the Vikes. Trinity Western captured gold in the event in 3:49.42, while Alberta took the silver medal in 3:51.58.

The Vikes will now have just two weeks to prepare for the CIS National Championships hosted in Windsor, Ont. Mar. 12-14.
