UBC Okanagan win (3-1) versus Kwantlen on Sunday; Tie SFU (1-1) on Saturday but are relegated to consolation round after losing in penalty kicks.

SURREY, BC –  The Kwantlen Polytechninc University Eagles Department of Athletics and Recreation in conjunction with the Kwantlen Students Association (KSA) hosted  a Spring pre-season exhibition varsity soccer tournament  from February 28-March 1st 2015. The UBC Okanagan women’s soccer team attended the annual event for the first time and finished without a loss and earned a bronze medal.

On Saturday playing Simon Fraser, who play in the GNAC conference of the NCAA, the Heat played the Burnaby based team to a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes of play. Mairia Horth scored for UBC Okanagan nine minutes into the match SFU notched the equalizer in the 32nd minute and the game remianed tied at 1 until the final whistle. The draw sent the game straight into a penalty kicks where UBC Okanagan came up short by 1 (4-3). Keeper Francesca Balletta turned away one shot, converting pks for the Heat were: Paige Howes, Hayley Carlson, and Mairi Horth.

In the consolation round on Sunday the Heat score a (3-1) victory over the host Kwantlen Eagles, who lost to the UFV Cascades (1-0) on Saturday, to earn the bronze. Goal scorers for UBC Okanagan were first years Courtney Hemmerling and Susan Traynor and senior Lana Finley.

Coach Claire Paterson said after the weekend that it was “Nice to claim a medal and a great exercise to test out players and combos for next year. Absolutely got some confidence [with the result].”
