Could the Olympic Games return to Australia in 2028?

The mayor of Brisbane, Graham Quirk, hopes so. Last week Quirk told the Brisbane Times that although it’s not a “priority” for the new state government today given 2028 is so far away, “but everything starts with an idea. Everything starts with a discussion.

Daniel Nestor & Sébastien Lareau, Sydney 2000

Two Australian cities have previously hosted the Games. At Melbourne 1956 Canada won two gold medals and a total of six (a silver and three bronze). Then 44 years later at Sydney 2000, Simon Whitfield, Daniel Igali, and the tennis team of Daniel Nestor and Sébastien Lareau won gold to go with three silver and eight bronze medals for the Canadian Olympic Team.

Reported interest for 2028 have come from cities in other countries such as Hungary and South Korea. A decision won’t be made until 2021 and the International Olympic Committee has recently opened the door to joint bids between cities, even across international borders.
