Thunderbirds and Whitecaps FC 2 to play on March 9

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds men’s soccer team has the honour of being the first opponents for the Whitecaps FC 2 (WFC2) as the two squads will play a preseason match on Monday, March 9.
“Any chance we get to play against a team at the next level we are keen to try and make that happen,” said UBC head coach Mike Mosher. “It is always good to test our team against stronger opposition as we can use it as a means to see where we are at, what are we doing well, who is progressing, and where are the areas we need to get better. We look forward to playing this match.”
The game will kick off at 7 p.m. on David Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium. It will be the first of four exhibition outings for WFC2 before its opener in Seattle on Sunday, March 29. The team is preparing for its inaugural season in the United Soccer League (USL).
Thunderbirds defender Chris Serban (Calgary) was one of WFC2’s first signings and forward Niall Cousens (Vancouver) was one of 28 players selected to participate in the team’s preseason camp, which began last month.
Serban was named the 2014 Canada West and Canadian Internuniversity Sport Rookie of the Year in his first campaign as a T-Bird. Cousens continued to excel in 2014 winning Canada West First Team All-Star honours for the second straight year.
