OTTAWA (CIS) – Nikki Cornwall, a volleyball player from Trinity Western University, and Michael Asselstine, a wrestler from the University of Alberta, are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending March 1st, 2015.

Cornwall, a second-year psychology student from Coquitlam, B.C., was named the most valuable player at the CIS championship in Toronto after she helped the top-seeded Spartans capture the first national title in program history. The 5-foot-10 setter racked up an impressive 133 assists, 40 digs and eight blocks as Trinity Western defeated eighth-ranked Laval 3-2, No. 4 Montreal 3-0 and No. 2 Alberta 3-2, with the new titlists coming back from two sets down in both five-set wins. Cornwall was the game MVP in the semifinal victory over Montreal and had her best statistical performance in the gold-medal match as she finished the contest with 53 assists and 20 digs.

Saint Mary’s basketball player Angelina Carvery and track and field standouts Laurence Beaudet of Sherbrooke and Sasha Gollish of Toronto were also nominated for the women’s award.

Asselstine, a fourth-year education student from Edmonton, become only the second male athlete in history to be named CIS wrestler of the year in consecutive seasons after he successfully defended his 61-kilogram title at the national championships in front of his home crowd at the U of A. Trailing 2-0 early in his gold-medal bout against McMaster’s Jason Buckle, the hometown favourite responded with 12 unanswered points to earn a convincing victory.
