|Ottawa, Ont., Mar. 2, 2015 — Chris von Martels of Ridgetown, Ont. has been recognized as the Dressage Canada Red Scarf Equestrian Athlete of the Month for January based on his successful start to the 2015 competition season with Zilverstar.
A long-listed rider on the Canadian Equestrian Team, von Martels, 32, recently earned the qualifying scores necessary to be considered for the Canadian Dressage Team at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Ont.
while competing in the Small Tour in Florida aboard Zilverstar, his 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding sired by Rousseau.
“I am very honoured to receive this award, and I’m very proud of Zilverstar,” said von Martels. “He is an extremely talented horse, and it is exciting to see his quality coming out. I’m very much looking forward to the future with him.”
Straight out of the gate for the 2015 season, the pair posted impressive scores against top performers at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF), held Jan. 21-25 in Wellington, Fla. Their achievements included scoring 69.632% for sixth place in the CDI1* FEI Intermediate I, as well as 66.605% for 12th place in the FEI Prix St. Georges.

The Dressage Canada Red Scarf Equestrian Athlete of the Month is a recognition program that celebrates the achievements of Canadian dressage riders who represent Canada in international competition in the FEI Pony, Children, Junior, Young Rider, Advanced, Grand Prix and Young Horse classes.
