Cotton Gets 2OT Winner For West Kelowna

by Kyle Anderson

(ISN) – It took 85 minutes of action but the West Kelowna Warriors got the first playoff win under their belts beating Penticton 4-3 in double overtime Tuesday at the South Okanagan Events Center.

The Warriors looked to set the tone early in the hockey game when Kyle Marino flattened Cody Depourcq on the side boards. Hunter Zandee and Tyler Kunz also had big hits in the opening period.
Penticton would jump on the board first when the puck came free off the side boards and let Tyson Jost go in on a breakaway. Jost would fake out Scott Patton and go upstairs on the backhand for the 1-0 lead.
West Kelowna would bounce back to tie it up at 9:29 when Josh Bly stick handled around Hunter Miska and tucked it in.
Brayden Gelsinger made it 2-1 Warriors at 17:19 when he worked out of the corner and fired a backhand towards the goal that deflected off a Vees defender.
The Vees would tie the game up again in the final minute when Demico Hannoun put a rebound past Patton from a Gabe Bast point shot.
The two teams would tighten down defensively as the middle frame went on, but the Vees would take the lead on another rebound goal, this time from Lewis Zerter-Gossage as he made it 3-2.
Kristian Blumenschein would tie the game six minutes into the 3rd period as his seeing eye shot would sneak through everybody and beat Miska.
The game would need overtime, and not just one. Demico Hannoun would have a pair of breakaways in the first OT, but Scott Patton stood tall and shut the door each time.
Hannoun would play a role in the game winning goal as well, as he sat in the penalty box five minutes into the 2nd OT.
Marino would charge the net and get a shot away and on the rebound was Jason Cotton, who rippled the mesh and charged up ice where his teammates met him in celebration.
Final shots on goal were 55-38 in favour of the Vees.
Patton took 2nd star while Cotton was named the 1st star.
