Mariners score game-winning run on hit and error in 10th inning

(ISN) – PEORIA, Ariz. – The Seattle Mariners opened Cactus League play with a walk-off 4-3 win over the San Diego Padres in 10 innings Wednesday afternoon at Peoria Stadium. Tyler Marlette scored the game-winning run on a single by Patrick Kivlehan and a fielding error by Padres right fielder Rymer Liriano.

Jesus Montero (2×2), Michael Dowd (2×2) and Kivlehan (2×3) each recorded multi-hit games as the Mariners out-hit the Padres 13-7. D.J. Peterson went 1-for-5 connecting on a solo home run in his first at-bat.

Eight Mariners pitchers combined to allow just a pair of earned runs in the 10-inning game. Starting pitcher Taijuan Walker tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out a pair in his spring debut. Sam Gaviglio (2.0,0,0,0,0,2), David Rollins (1.0,0,0,0,0,0), Carson Smith (1.0,0,0,0,2,1) and Mark Lowe (1.0,1,0,0,1,0) added scoreless outings. Lowe (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless 10th inning.

The Padres were limited to two hits in the first six innings before Justin Upton led off the 7th inning with a home run off the center field fence. Tommy Medica went 2-for-2 with an RBI coming off the bench.

The Mariners (1-0) and Padres (0-1) return to Cactus League play tomorrow (Thursday, March 5) at 12:05 PT/1:05 MT at Peoria Stadium. The game will be televised in the Seattle are on ROOT Sports and on the radio on 710 ESPN Seattle and the Mariners Radio Network. Left-handed pitcher Roenis Elias is scheduled to start for the Mariners against Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner.

Game Notes: Mariners 1B Ji-Man Choi suffered a right tibula fracture in the top of the 9th inning…the walk-off hit came on a single by Patrick Kivlehan and a fielding error by Padres right fielder Rymer Liriano to allow Tyler Marlette score on the play.
