MONTREAL – With a victory on Saturday (March 7), four varsity sports teams from McGill University can book their ticket to next week’s historic Sportsnet U weekend for CIS championships, March 12-15.
Should all four win, it would give McGill an unprecedented six squads at the CIS championships during the same week, including the men’s and women’s track teams, which has already qualified for their Nationals at Windsor, Ont.
Super Saturday kicks off with women’s hockey at 2 p.m. when the second-ranked Montreal Carabins will have their backs against the wall as they host No.1- McGill in Game 2 of a best-of-three RSEQ league championship series for the Dr. Ed Enos Cup at U de M’s CEPSUM Arena. The Martlets won the opener 6-2 at home. If a rubber match is needed, it is set for Sunday at McConnell Arena (3 pm). Both finalists have already qualified for the CIS Final Eight but the Quebec champion will have a better seeding at the CIS tourney in Calgary.
In women’s basketball, the top-seeded Martlets, ranked No.4 in the nation, will confront second-seeded UQAM Citadins at 5 p.m. in the RSEQ Final Four tournament’s gold medal game at the Mitchell gym in Lennoxville. McGill is seeking their fourth consecutive banner and the winner advances to the CIS Final Eight in Quebec City.
In men’s basketball, the top-seeded Redmen will meet third-seeded Bishop’s at 8 p.m. in the RSEQ Final Four’s gold medal game at the Mitchell gym in Lennoxville. This will be the third straight year that these two rivals meet in the final and McGill is seeking their third consecutive league title. The winner advances to the CIS Final Eight in Toronto. Both the men’s and women’s champions will receive the James Naismith trophy.
In men’s hockey at 8 p.m., the Redmen will meet the Windsor Lancers in a clash of OUA East and West first-place finishers at the South Windsor Arena in the OUA bronze medal game. The winner receives the OUA’s third and final berth to the CIS Final Eight tourney in Halifax.
