VICTORIA, B.C. – The winter’s training cycle paid off for the UBC Thunderbirds as all teams demonstrated good pace on the course at the annual Elk Lake Spring Sprints in Victoria, B.C. UBC’s varsity men and women came out on top of all the key matchups against their Victoria Vikes rivals.
Saturday’s small boats saw UBC set a solid tone for the regatta the women placed first (Hillary Janssens and Emily Gerson) and second (Rachel Vukovich / Julie Sheppard) and in the senior pair, the men’s pair of Ben Coull and Callum MacKenzie were first. UBC also had strong sculling performances against some good club competition from Seattle and the Rowing Canada Development Centre with T-Bird Zoe Fettig-Winn finishing third in the Sr. W1x, Marcus Van der Sande placing fifth in the LM1x. UBC’s novice women also rowed to a first-place finish with six-second win.
The big boats came out Sunday and UBC came out on top in all contests. UBC won the W4+ (Fettig-Winn, Janssens, Emily Gerson, Katherine Enns and cox Emmie Page) as did the women’s 8+ who have not lost a race in North America for the last year and a half (Fettig-Winn, Janssens, Gerson, Enns, Sheppard, Vukovich, Erin Pierik, Meranda Kirker and cox Page). UBC men may have won the banner at this year’s national university championship but it was bittersweet as Victoria took the 8+. The Thunderbirds (Aaron Lattimer, Harris Sheldon, Ben Coull, Harlan Dohm, Ben de Wit, MacKenzie, Van der Sande, Angus Todd and cox Kevin Chung) put together a much-improved performance on Sunday to get to the line 1.9 seconds up on the CURC’s gold medalists. The 8+ racing certainly foreshadows some tight racing to be had at this year’s Brown Cup in Richmond, B.C., on April 4.
