(ISN) – VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes rowing teams had a strong finish at the 41st annual Elk Lake Spring Regatta, Mar. 7-8. Victoria hosted the event while also taking on Oregon in their head-to-head meet this past weekend.

The men’s eights race was highlighted by the Vikes novice crew, comprised of Samuel Hogman,Andrew Hendrickson, Brandon Carnduff, Isaac Davies, Eric Laurin, Jamie Ferguson, Matthew Szymanowski, Taylor Ellison and coxswain Alexandra Clancy, as they led the 1850-m course for most of the race. It was in the final stretch that the UBC Thunderbirds edged both the UVic varsity and novice teams for first place in 5:41.42.

The men’s varsity eights, second-place finishers, crossed two seconds behind the T-Birds on Sunday in 5:43.30 after racing against Oregon Saturday. The crew included rowers Sam Horn, Alex Walker,Connor McGuigan, Brett Larson, Elyas Forstbauer, Mark Davies, Christopher Marshall, Adam Donaldson and coxswain Jacob Koudys.

“This goes to show how much depth we have in our program,” said Aalbert Van Schothorst, Vikes men’s rowing head coach. “For our novice teams to place this strong of a finish, it’s truly amazing.”

Daan Arscott, Harrison Backer, Eric Laurin, Andrew Hendrickson also crossed the line second in the men’s straight quad (6:12.76), seven seconds behind Burnaby Lake Rowing Club (6:05.75).

For their first spring competition, the Vikes women’s crew also had a strong regatta with several second-place finishes.

“I think the novices rowed well with two members missing due to injuries,” said Rick Crawley, Vikes women’s rowing head coach. “They raced in full Vikes gear for the first time and were very proud to put on the colours. We seem to have a solid reserve crew and may look into developing them for the varsity boat.”

The women’s eights race was very close as the Vikes varsity team, led by Becky Wilder and rowersDeborah Snell, Cate White, Madeline Spangehl, Alex Bovell, Jillian Legare, Rebecca Zimmerman,Beth McConnell, Erin Moen (6:15.00), neared UBC (6:13.03) by two seconds. The UVic novice team followed in 6:29.56.

Third year White earned second place in the lightweight single (8:12.07), while Moen and McConnell finished the double in 7:34.22 behind Burnaby Lake Rowing Club (7:19.01).

The Vikes women’s coxed four Junior Varisty team comprised of Kirsten McKay, Giorgia Van Brunschot, Hannah Jenks, Courtney Smith and cox Wilder who finished second behind UBC (6:58.78).

Up next, the Vikes men will travel to Richmond for the Brown Cup, on Apr. 4, while the Vikes women’s team will split up for the San Diego Crew Classic in California and the Dualing over A Grand at Elk Lake, both set for Mar. 28-29.
