ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS athletes of the week (#23): McGill’s Sylla, Bishop’s Naji honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – Basketball players Mariam Sylla from McGill University and Majid Naji from Bishop’s University are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending March 8, 2015.

Sylla, a third-year pharmacology student from Conakry, Guinea, posted back-to-back double-doubles at the RSEQ Final Four in Lennoxville, Que., to help the nationally third-ranked Martlets capture their fourth straight conference banner and qualify for this week’s CIS championship in Quebec City. The 6-foot-1 forward tallied 22 points and 11 rebounds last Thursday in a 70-57 semifinal win over Laval and added a career-best 25 points to go with 14 boards on Saturday in a hard-fought 53-51 gold-medal victory against UQAM, including McGill’s last eight points in the contest. Sylla and the Martlets open the Final 8 tournament against Saint Mary’s Thursday at 12:30 p.m.

St. Francis Xavier hockey player Jenna Downey, Windsor basketball player Korissa Williams and UBC basketball player Kris Young were also nominated for the women’s award.

Naji, a fifth-year economics student from Lunel, France, had back-to-back 18-point performances at the Final Four host Gaiters posted upset wins over Laval and McGill to claim their first Quebec title since 1999. The 6-foot-11 forward opened the weekend with 18 points and nine rebounds in a 76-65 semifinal win against the Rouge et Or last Friday and added 18 points and eight boards on Saturday as Bishop’s shocked the reigning conference champion Redmen 68-63. The sixth-seeded Gaiters advanced to the CIS Final 8 in Toronto and are set to open the competition against Ottawa Thursday at 8 p.m.

Hockey players Philippe Maillet of UNB, Andrew D’Agostini of Guelph and Brett Ferguson of Alberta were the other male nominees.
