Thunderbirds record shutouts against SFU and Whitecaps FC 2


VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds men’s soccer team earned clean sheets against the Simon Fraser Clan and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 in two recent exhibition matches.
On Friday on David Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium, UBC clinched a 1-0 win against SFU. Midfielder and reigning Canada West Most Valuable Player Navid Mashinchi scored the winning goal in the 23rd minute.

The two teams will the back end of the home-and-home spring series on Saturday, March 28 at SFU in Burnaby, B.C. Last season, UBC swept the season series between the Lower Mainland schools, winning on the road in the fall and then at home in the spring. Both games ended with 3-0 scorelines.
On Monday, the Thunderbirds provided the opposition as the Whitecaps FC 2 played their first-ever game, which ended in a scoreless draw.

Fifth-year UBC goalkeeper Luke O’Shea of Richmond, B.C., earned the shutout in both matches.
