(ISN) – MESA, Ariz. – The Oakland Athletics rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to record a walk-off 4-3 win over the Seattle Mariners Thursday afternoon in Cactus League play at HoHoKam Stadium.
Leading 3-1, relief pitcher Mark Lowe (2-1) allowed a pair of runs before Kent Matthes delivered a walk-off single to right field for the game-winner off LHP Paul Fry.
The game was the first leg of Will Ferrell’s Cactus League tour, as the comedian/actor played one inning at shortstop with the A’s (1st inning) and one inning at second base with the Mariners (2nd inning).
Starting pitcher Jordan Pries was solid in his second spring start, allowing one run on one hit (leadoff triple in the first inning) in 3.0 innings. Left-hander Tyler Olson added 2.0 perfect innings to continue his impressive spring. The Gonzaga product has not allowed a baserunner in 5.0 innings (15 batters faced) with 8 strikeouts.
Austin Jackson (2×2, R, 3B) and Stefen Romero (2×4, R) each recorded multi-hit games for the Mariners.
The A’s jumped out to the early lead with a single tally in the bottom of the first inning. Left fielder Billy Burns tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sam Fuld.
The Mariners jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the top of third inning to take the lead. Austin Jackson tripled to the left field gap and scored on a single by Justin Ruggiano. Nelson Cruz gave the Mariners the lead with a towering sac fly to left field. Seattle padded the lead to 3-1 with a run-scoring single by Jesus Montero in the sixth inning.
