HOW IT HAPPENED
The Philadelphia Phillies prospects exploded for five runs in the second inning thanks in large part to two, two-run extra base hits in the form of a double and a triple.

Junior National Team starter Josh Burgmann (Nanaimo, BC) was charged with five earned runs and six hits during his three-inning outing.

After a pair of perfect frames thrown by reliever Michael Brettell (Fonthill, Ont.) the Phillies scored two runs with two out in the sixth courtesy of a two-run double.

A pair of errors led to two more Phillies runs scoring in the seventh as they moved ahead by nine. All four runs came off reliever Matt Ianni (Ottawa, Ont.) although none of them were earned

The juniors could not get anything going offensively as they managed only five hits and did not advance a runner past second base.

Two Canadians, Colin Kleven (Kamloops, BC) and Jesen Dygestile-Therrien (Montréal, Que.), tossed scoreless frames for the Phillies.

JNT HIGHLIGHTS
Brettell was very effective through two innings of work as he retired all six hitters he faced. In the fourth he got two groundouts and a fly out, while in the fourth he induced three straight fly outs to the outfield.

Peter Hutzal (Calgary, Alta.) and Kobe Hyland (Spruce Grove, Alta.) accounted for four of the juniors’ five hits on the day as they each collected two singles apiece. Hutzal drew a walk in his only other plate appearance, which came in the bottom of the ninth.

Demi Orimoloye (Orleans, Ont.) singled to right in the seventh after Hyland singled. Both runners were left on base after Josh Naylor’s (Mississauga, Ont.) hard hit grounder was snared by the Phillies’ first baseman

Mathieu Deneault-Gauthier (Candiac, Que.) tossed two scoreless innings of relief in the eighth and ninth frames. He allowed one hit and walked one batter.

THEY SAID IT
RP Brettell on his perfect two innings of work:
“I was able to keep the ball down (in the strike zone) and managed to get some ground balls and fly balls,” he said. “It felt good being outside for the first time this year and I’m happy with the way I threw the ball.”

Brettell on facing pro hitters:
“It’s fun. I just try and concentrate on what I need to do on the mound and treat them as any other hitter I (normally) face. You can get away with mistakes back home, but here the hitters aren’t as forgiving.”

FAMILIAR FACES
Longtime Senior National Team Manager Ernie Whitt was managing the Phillies squad and was also joined on the staff by former National Team player Rob Ducey … Both Whitt and Ducey are members of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame … Whitt will manage Team Canada at the upcoming Pan Am Games in Ajax this July.
