(ISN) – The Cariboo Cougars exploded for four second-period goals to draw first blood in their best-of-three BC Major Midget League semifinal series against the South Island Royals at Kin 1.
The Cougars went on to win 5-0 and will have a chance to clinch the series on Saturday afternoon at 1. Chase DuBois led the way with a goal and two assists.
Steven Jandric, Austin Gray, Darren Hards and Mitchell Williams also scored for the Cougars. Griffen Outhouse made 21 saves for his first shutout of the post-season. Austin Roden made 10 saves for the Royals before Lane Delfs came on in relief after the Cougars’ fourth goal. Delfs made seven stops.
Jandric got things going for the Cougars at 5:55 of the middle stanza with a power-play goal. After a point shot was blocked by a Royals’ defender, the puck squirted to Jandric at the side of the net and he buried it past Roden. DuBois and Justin Almeida got the assists.
Just over a minute later DuBois made it 2-0 hammering home a one-timer off a feed from Hards at 7:08. Jesse Pomeroy got the other helper.
Jandric, from behind the net, fed Gray in the low slot at 14:06 and the captain converted.
Hards had the prettiest goal of the period finishing off a passing play with Almeida and DuBois at 17:21 with a perfectly placed backhand on the short side over Roden’s shoulder.
Williams made it 5-0 at 12:16 of the third, ringing a shot from the high slot off the crossbar and in. Pomeroy picked up his second assist of the evening.
There was no scoring in the first period, but both teams generated good scoring chances. Outhouse made a great pad save off Tanner Sidaway after the Royals got a two-on-one down low on the power play.
Colton Thomas and Jandric each had great opportunities at the other end, but Roden was up to the task.
If necessary the two teams will play Game 3 on Sunday at 8:15 a.m.
