OMAHA, Neb. — St. Cloud State junior center David Morley scored the game-winning goal at 9:49 of the second overtime to give the Huskies a 2-1 win at Omaha in the first game of the NCHC Playoffs best of three series.
Joey Benik was credited with the assist on the game winner.
The Huskies improved to 17-17-1 with the win.
Morley accounted for both Huskies goals as he scored the first goal of the game at the 14:02 mark of the first period. Morley tipped the puck in from the left side of the net and was assisted by Niklas Nevalaine and Mika Ilvonen.
Morley has 15 goals on the season and has scored three goals over the past two games.
Sophomore goaltender Charlie Lindgren posted a career high 45 saves that included 16 in the overtime frames.
Omaha’s Austin Ortego scored a short handed goal at 9:43 of the second period to tie the game.
Through the first three periods Omaha held a 30-21 advantage in shots on goal. The Huskies outshot the Mavericks 13-11 in the first overtime to close the gap. Omaha finished the game with a 46-59 advantage in shots on goal.
The last St. Cloud State game to end in double overtime was on March 26, 2010 at the NCAA West Regional in St. Paul when the Huskies beat Northern Michigan 4-3.
The following year on March 12, the Huskies played a triple overtime game at Minnesota Duluth in the first round of the WCHA playoffs, losing to the Bulldogs 3-2.
St. Cloud State is 1-2-1 in overtime games this season, 6-7 in one goal games and 11-5-1 when scoring the first goal of the game.
