Sports-CardiologyWebsite-LogoSports Cardiology B.C. is a Vancouver Coastal Health clinical and research program out of UBC Hospital that aims to limit the risk associated incredibly beneficial impacts of exercise.

The program was founded in 2010 by Vancouver Olympic Games Lead Cardiologist Dr. Saul Isserow and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jack Taunton.

For the purpose of this research, testing will include a Heart Health Questionnaire and resting 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG).

Who: Testing will be offered for young “competitive” athletes aged 12-35.“A competitive athlete is one who participates in an organized team or individual sport that requires systematic training and regular competition against others and places a high premium on athletic excellence and achievement”

Why: When a seemingly healthy young athlete collapses on the field it is a rare and tragic event. Through this foundational research Sports Cardiology B.C. aims to discover the prevalence of diseases that can lead to sudden cardiac death in order to prevent these tragic occurrences. This study is the first of it’s kind in Canada.

When: March 22nd (11:30am-7:30pm), March 23rd, (9am-5pm), March 24th (9am-5pm)

Where: The testing will take place in Gym 027, which is in the physio room of the UBC Okanagan Recreations Facility – 3211 Athletics Court
