Old rivalries to be renewed at Olds

Old rivalries to be renewed at Olds

March 23, 2015 – The Olds Broncos are set to host the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s best curlers.

The MacEwan Griffins and NAIT Ooks will look to renew their rivalry in the Men’s Division. The two ACAC squads have met in the last two CCAA finals. Last season, the Griffins earned the gold medal at Sault College; the season before saw NAIT capture the National Championship.

Earlier this month at the Conference Championship, MacEwan downed NAIT.

This year’s host team, the Olds Broncos, advanced to the ACAC bronze-medal game, where they fell in a tight bronze-medal match at the hands of the Augustana Vikings.

Meanwhile, the Sault Cougars, CCAA bronze medalists a year ago on home ice, are back at Nationals with something to prove. The Cougars, skipped by Chris Glibota, successfully defended their OCAA crown with a victory over the Fleming Knights.

On the women’s side, the ACAA will represented for the first time – by the Holland Hurricanes.

OCAA rivals Fanshawe and Humber met in the Conference Championship final and will both represent Ontario at Olds. The Falcons once again downed the Hawks for OCAA bragging rights. But it’s Humber who medaled last year at Nationals, earning silver in Sault Ste. Marie.

In total, eight men’s and eight women’s teams will compete in the tournament, which will be officiated by the Canadian Curling Association.

Round-robin play begins on Wednesday. The gold-medal games will take place Saturday evening. Complete schedule.
