Training is really shifting into high gear for Canada’s Para Soccer Team as players and staff worked hard through a tough training camp that just wrapped up in Toronto on Monday.
The group is getting ready for the 2015 CP Football World Championship in England where they’ll play out of Group D with the Netherlands, Argentina, and Northern Ireland and Head Coach Drew Ferguson has to decide which 14 players will represent Canada by the time their tournament opens on Wednesday 17 June against Northern Ireland.
“It was the first chance in 2015 that we as a staff had a chance to evaluate the players when all together at once,” said Ferguson. “With the spring weather not cooperating we were indoors, but still had plenty of positive attitudes and the players are now feeling the pressure and excitement of trying to make the squad of 14 going to the world championships in England in June.”
The team had 19 players in camp with players’ ages ranging from 15 to 27. The goalkeeper position is getting some special attention as that’s one spot they’ll be looking to fill in time for the tournament at St. George’s Park, which is the FA’s national training centre.
Six goalkeepers were in camp as the staff looks to make some tough decisions in that area.
The team will head back to Toronto for another training camp in April.
