(ISN) – PEORIA, Ariz. – The Mariners took an early lead but could not overcome a pair of early three-run innings en route to a 6-4 loss to the San Diego Padres in Cactus League play on Tuesday afternoon at Peoria Stadium.

The game was played in front of 7,289 fans as the Mariners had their Cactus League record fall to 9-10-2.

Seattle jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, getting a leadoff double to right-center from Austin Jackson and an RBI single from Seth Smith, but the lead would not hold.

After San Diego scored three runs in the second frame, Smith drove a ball over the right-center field fence to bring the Mariners to within a run before the Padres scored three more in the bottom half, including a two-run home run by Justin Upton.

Seattle attempted to make a comeback by scoring single runs in the fourth and eighth innings, but couldn’t muster enough offense to erase the early deficit. In the fourth inning Jackson singled to center with two outs to score Dustin Ackley who had doubled with one out, and in the eighth, Endy Chavez doubled home Willie Bloomquist who had singled to start the frame.

Starter J.A. Happ allowed six runs (5 earned) in 3.2 innings before Mark Lowe (1.1 IP), Fernando Rodney (1.0 IP), Tom Wilhelmsen (1.0 IP) and Joe Saunders (1.0 IP) shut down the Padres offense for the final 4.1 innings.
