(ISN) – SURPRISE, Ariz. – Seattle struggled to put hits on the board en route to a 5-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Friday night in front of 9,329 fans at Surprise Stadium.

Starter James Paxton allowed a two-run home run to Eric Hosmer in the first inning but settled down to face the minimum six batters over the next two frames before an error in the fourth inning led to three unearned runs. Paxton threw 68 pitches, 36 of them for strikes.

The Mariners finally broke through in the 8th inning, getting leadoff walks from Mike Zunino and Dustin Ackley (both were pinch-run for) before Tyler Smith singled sharply to left field to score Nelson Ward with the first run.

Relievers Matt Anderson (0.1 IP), Charlie Furbush (1.0 IP), Yoervis Medina (1.0 IP), Dominic Leone (1.0 IP) andCarson Smith (1.0 IP) tossed scoreless ball over the final 4.1 frames.
