Tim Hunter head coach of Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team

(ISN) – Calgary, AB – Hockey Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian Hockey League and Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence management group, announced Friday that Moose Jaw Warriors Head Coach Tim Hunter will be the head coach of Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team for the 2015 IIHF U18 World Championship, April 16-26 in Zug and Lucerne, Switzerland.

Hunter recently completed his first season as head coach of the Warriors, guiding the Club to a 32-35-4-1 record. Prior to joining the Warriors, Hunter spent 14 seasons as an assistant coach and 16 seasons as a player in the NHL. As a player, the Calgary, AB native won a Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames in 1989 and also played two WHL seasons with the Seattle Breakers from 1978-1980. With the Breakers, Hunter racked up 119 points (23g-96a) and 615 penalty minutes through 145 games played.

Hockey Canada also announced that University of Alberta Golden Bears Head Coach Ian Herbers has been named as an assistant coach on the squad. Herbers recently guided a Golden Bears team comprised entirely of WHL Alumni to the CIS National Championship for the second consecutive season. Herbers is a WHL graduate, as the former defenceman collected 42 points (10g-46a) and 782 penalty minutes through 257 career games played primarily for the Swift Current Broncos. Herbers continued his amateur playing career at the University of Alberta before embarking on a 12-year professional career.

The coaching staff was selected by the Program of Excellence policy committee, alongside Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada’s vice-president of hockey operations and national teams, and Tom Renney, Hockey Canada’s president and chief executive officer.

Ryan Jankowski, director of player personnel with Hockey Canada, will select Canada’s roster for the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship, with support from the coaching staff. The roster will include players whose CHL teams either missed the playoffs or are no longer competing in the playoffs.
