SALT LAKE CITY — Freshman Andrew Snow broke a 3-3 tie in the 12th inning with a two-run home run, the first of his career, to send No. 12 Arizona State to a 5-3 extra-innings win against Utah on Thursday at Smith’s Ballpark in Salt Lake City.
The two teams traded runs between the second and fourth innings, and took a 2-2 tie into the eighth inning.
Righthander Ryan Burr, who conceded the tying run in the ninth, struck out consecutive batters with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th to keep the Sun Devils (20-7, 8-2) in the game.
Lefthander Eli Lingos (1-0) allowed just one base runner in the 11th and 12th innings to earn his first career collegiate win.
Snow tallied three RBIs and scored two runs, both career highs, and Johnny Sewald added a pair of hits, including a triple to the right field wall in the top of the third for his first extra-base hit of the season.
The Utes used a two-out solo home run from AJ Young to take an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Joey Bielek doubled down the right field line in the top of the third for the Devils’ first hit of the game, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a RBI groundout from Snow to tie the game at one run apiece.
Utah’s Cody Scaggari hit an RBI single in the bottom of the third to put the Utes ahead by one but ASU countered in the top of the fourth with a two-out RBI to left field from Brian Serven to tie it up for the second time.
Righthander Darin Gillies tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief before he was replaced with one out in the eighth. He has allowed just two earned runs in nine appearances across 14.2 innings since he moved to a reliever role March 6.
Snow scored from third on a wild pitch with one out in the top of the eighth to break the 2-2 tie. Sewald singled through the right side to move Snow from first to third before a wild pitch in the next at-bat to pinch hitter Chris Beall put ASU ahead by one.
Young laid down a successful squeeze bunt with runners on the corners and one out in the ninth to score Dallas Carroll and tie the game. Carroll was hit by a pitch after a 10-pitch at-bat to open the frame and stole second before he advanced to third on a bunt single by Wyler Smith. Burr struck out the next two batters to send the game into extra innings.
Burr gave up a leadoff single in the 10th inning to Josh Rose, who moved to second on a throwing error on the play and to third on a sacrifice bunt in the next at-bat. Burr then issued consecutive intentional walks to load the bases before his back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.
Trever Allen singled up the middle to lead off the 12th inning and set up Snow’s game-winning home run.
Starting righthander Seth Martinez allowed two runs on five hits and two walks across 4.2 innings. Righthander Jordan Aboites took over with one out in the eighth and induced a fly ball to right field and a groundout to end the inning.
